MWC in Barcelona: NB-IoT for smart cities and other use cases

The world’s largest gathering for the mobile industry takes place at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) from February 27 to March 2, 2017, in Barcelona. “Feel connected all over Europe” is the motto of Deutsche Telekom this year, highlighting its reputation as an innovative partner for digital collaboration throughout Europe. Among many solutions, we present at our booth smart city use cases based on Narrowband IoT technology.

Soon, mobile operators will connect more machines than people. Experience this future first hand at MWC. At our booth, visitors can already discover Internet of Things (IoT) and other smart solutions. These include All-IP Next-Generation Network solutions, connectivity, and security solutions, “5G FOR GOOD” with 5G-enabled augmented reality, robotic solutions and use cases based on Narrowband IoT technology (NB IoT). This technology, suited to applications requiring low bandwidths and low energy consumption, such as intelligent parking systems, smart meters, and waste management, is ideal for use in Smart Cities.

NB-IoT solutions for Smart Cities

At its NB-IoT prototyping hub, Deutsche Telekom is working with selected partners and start-ups to develop cutting-edge solutions for Smart Cities. At our booth, we present some examples, which include:

  • Smart Water Management: Ayyeka (ayyeka.com) is a California start-up that makes smart water management a reality. It develops end-to-end remote monitoring solutions that streamline and secure the process of bringing field data to decision makers and SCADA systems, enabling smart infrastructure and environmental networks.
  • Smart Waste Management: EcoMobile LLC (ecomobile.hr), a Croatian company, offers smart solutions for waste management. For example, its technologies allow bins to be pinpointed electronically and the fill level of remote waste containers to be measured remotely. This has numerous advantages for cities, including reducing CO2 emissions and saving up to 50% on transport and labor costs.
  • Smart Lighting: inteliLIGHT (intelilight.eu) from Flashnet, a Romanian company, ensures that the right amount of light is provided where and when needed. In-depth grid management gives accurate real-time feedback on any changes occurring along the grid, reducing energy consumption and offering advanced maintenance optimization tools.
  • Smart Agriculture: BeeAndMe (beeand.me) from Vienna is a beehive monitoring solution which provides technical assistance to beekeepers: A microprocessor unit measures all significant beekeeping parameters. The data collected by the “baby monitor” for bees is also processed via data mining techniques, helping find answers to important scientific questions.

More Highlights

In 2017, Deutsche Telekom will roll out NB-IoT commercially in eight countries: Germany, the Netherlands, Greece, Poland, Hungary, Austria, Slovakia, and Croatia. At  MWC, DT and China Unicom have also announced a strategic partnership to jointly enhance their M2M competencies and to create new business opportunities in Europe and China.

Beyond these exciting M2M/IoT developments, we also present a large range of solutions for business customers. One of these is Cloud CPE, which enables customers to easily order and activate specific service within just a few clicks through self-care portal. It can be used for all services one office might need: Firewall, traffic management, QoS, VPN, monitoring & reporting. Another solution is Communication Recording, a service designed with financial institutions in mind that allow conversations with customers to be securely recorded.

Find out more about these solutions and many others at the MWC in Barcelona in hall 3, stand 3M31.
