Telekom and Osram light the way to the Smart City

Partnerships are crucial to unlocking the maximum potential of smart city. We understand that better than most, as demonstrated by our close collaboration with Osram on intelligent lighting systems for outdoor (streets and parking areas) and indoor (public and office buildings) — which play a powerful role in driving the digital transformation of cities.

Deutsche Telekom is teaming up with Osram to delivery smart city solutions that are designed to help cities become smarter and more efficient. The two groups recently formalized their working relationship through a memorandum of understanding, which will enable Deutsche Telekom’s national operators throughout Europe to sell Osram’s LED lighting products and Osram to market our Smart City expertise, along with our communication, cloud and systems integration services.

A good example of our collaboration on smart cities can be found in Wipperfürth, which is a municipality in the state of North Rhine Westphalia located about 40 km north-east of Cologne.

Wipperfürth is an interesting case study of a German city that wanted to preserve its historical buildings and street lights while installing smart city solutions. Michael von Rekowski, the mayor of Wipperfürth, explains that the city began its transformation into a smart city in 2010 by changing its city lighting equipment to LED using equipment from Osram.

The Wipperfürth Smart City project further involved the installation of modern LED city lights equipped with Osram’s Street Light Control system. Deutsche Telekom supports the Osram management software with its cloud technology and secure data centres. Overall this lighting project has enabled the city to cut CO2 emissions by 380 tonnes per year.
