CEMA: Mobility Monitoring for Central Europe
Floods, fires and epidemics: What makes the possibility of such large-scale natural disasters so scary is their inherent unpredictability. Most of the time, they won’t stop at national borders. In a time of crisis, people must be guided towards safety as quickly as possible. That’s why T-Mobile Czech Republic joined forces with the VSB University of Technology Ostrava to develop a mobility monitoring and management system to be rolled out in several central European countries.
The Central Europe Mobility Atlas (CEMA) is part of the Transport Systems Development Centre RODOS. This innovative solution allows the movement of people to be monitored and managed across borders for the first time ever. Conceptualized and tested in the Czech Republic, the technology will be gradually implemented in Poland, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, and Slovenia in cooperation with Deutsche Telekom entities in Europe.
How it works
CEMA uses data from multiple sources: It combines anonymized information from mobile operators, networks, and connected GPS on-board units with data analyzed from previous crisis situations. The processing of input data is done in real time: In case of an emergency, the system reacts immediately and informs, for example, integrated rescue units which then proceed to initiate further action. The analysis of the combined data provides exact information in real time and translates it into an easy-to-understand graphic.
Key to smart cities
Apart from its life-saving features in the event of a natural catastrophe, CEMA can also be deployed in a variety of other important areas. For example, if you know where and when residents of a city are moving, it is much easier to plan public transport capacities and the appropriate traffic infrastructure. With CEMA, urban planners can keep the exact needs of citizens in view. It’s the same for all other sectors depending on human mobility, such as tourism. And CEMA is a key technological component for building the smart cities of the future. Smart infrastructure, smart parking, smart mobility – it will all be made possible by analyzing the movement of populations.
